Yesterday, we hosted a workshop for several local girl scouts to help earn their Junior Digital Photographer badge. Julie led the girls in a discussion of basic photography techniques where the girls learned about composition and the rule of thirds, complimentary and opposing colors, light and shadow, and what the different camera modes actually do.
After the discussion, we went on a short photo walk where the girls could practice all the new things they had learned. And once back inside, Julie showed them how to edit their photos to get the best results.
While we both have extensive experience and formal training as educators, we rarely get to use those skills any more. It was nice being able to share knowledge with youngsters eager to learn.
